Tennessee Volunteers

Founded in 1794, The University of Tennessee at Knoxville is a public university with a current enrollment of almost twenty eight thousand students. The University was almost destroyed during the Civil War and was closed and the buildings used as a hospital by the Confederates and later occupied by the Union. Reopened in 1869, the state granted the university land grant status allowing the school to broaden its curriculum to include agriculture, engineering and military science.

Boasting a passionate football program and spirited athletic teams, the Tennessee Volunteers participate in the Southeastern Conference. The University of Tennessee's proudest moment athletically was their 1998 NCAA football national title. Notable athletic alumni include Peyton Manning, Todd Helton and Reggie White.
