A member of the Big 12 Conference, the athletic program, although a participant in all major college sports, has gained prominence for their basketball. Kansas basketball goes as back almost as far as the game itself. Dr. James Naismith, who is credited with the invention of the game, founded the Jayhawk basketball program in 1898, just six years after Naismith had written the official rules. Naismith continued to coached the team through the 1906-1907 season and surprisingly is the only coach in school history with a losing record.

Currently ranking 3rd in all time victories behind only Kentucky and North Carolina, the Kansas Jayhawks basketball program has claimed 3 national titles (1952, 1988, and 2008) and has participated in 14 Final Fours. A perennial national contender, Kansas plays its home games in historic in Allen Fieldhouse in the midst of the celebrated chant "Rock Chalk Jayhawk".
